Teaching

Courses Taught

I teach classes in international security and national security policy, technology and war, and US foreign policy. My courses are generally a mix of discussion and lecture, and get students interested and engaged with the materials through active-learning exercises and simulations. Email me for a copy of any of my course syllabi or activities I use in the classroom!

I am interested in working with MA/MPP, honors thesis, and research students (INCO/Hamel Center) who want to study the arms trade, civil-military relations, and US defense policy. Many of my prior research students have had the opportunity to co-author research and/or policy publications with me.

UNH Courses:

  • Strategy & National Security Policy

  • International Security

  • Technology & War

  • Challenges in International Affairs

  • US in World Affairs

  • Challenges of Nuclear Weapons (Stanton Foundation Grant Course)

  • Research Methods Proseminar

Advice for Students

Letters of Recommendation

Don’t be afraid of asking for a letter of recommendation! None of your professors would be where they are unless people agreed to write letters for them. I am generally happy to write letters for students who have taken more than one class with me, and have done well in those classes. I can write stronger letters for students who came to office hours, spoke up in class, and demonstrated interest and knowledge of the material.

When you ask for a letter, please email me with: the deadline, the opportunity you are applying to, and any other relevant information, such as your resume/CV, a statement of purpose, or other information that would be helpful for me to include. Please ask me at least a month prior to the deadline, and don’t be afraid to follow up close to the deadline if I have not yet submitted the letter.

Jobs, Internships, Grad School

If you are a UNH student, connect with the Political Science and International Affairs Department on LinkedIn. You’ll be able to see our network of alumni, and can reach out to folks who have positions you are interested in.

Office hours are an excellent time to come talk about your career goals. We can brainstorm internship opportunities and talk about steps to get you where you want to go. For students interested in international security/international policy, I am the UNH coordinator for the annual West Point Student Conference on US Affairs. UNH sends one student to this conference each year. Please email me if you are interested in being the UNH representative.

Grad School: Students interested in graduate school should present their capstone work at the Undergraduate Research Conference. If you want to go to graduate school, come to office hours so we can talk about your area of focus and which schools to apply to. Recent graduates have accepted MA or MPP positions at prestigious programs including the Harvard Kennedy School, Johns Hopkins SAIS, Boston University, and more.
